daredevildaring: (ain't that some shit)

One thing Kara had long since gotten used to on board the Argo was the long stretches of down time. Sure, they had three-week spans where none of them got to sleep, but they were usually interspersed with a month or two of flying from place to place doing nothing but recovering, researching and trying desperately to find ways to amuse themselves. Jayne and the Shepherd had taken to hanging up a punching bag in the loading dock and using it to spar, and Kara was at the point where if that didn't keep her attention for more than an hour, she was ready to go find a person to take its place.

As she started down the stairs, though, she realized she wouldn't have to choose between the two. Someone was already having a go at the bag, and pretty vigorously by the sounds of it. As she rounded the bend in the stairs she saw it was Jim, and her mouth curved in a grin. The new mechanic wasn't really that new anymore (two months was long enough to have a decent idea of where not to leave your empty beer bottles and who not to cut in line for the shower) but he was a hell of a lot of fun to drink and spar with.

"Is this a private party, or can I gatecrash?" she asked, coming up behind him already in the process of strapping on her gloves, just in case he'd actually thought there was more than one right answer to that question.

"I dunno, you think you can keep up?" He already knew the answer to that question, but he felt like asking anyway.

He'd been around long enough that things on the Argo were becoming second nature, and the punching bag was one of of his favorite toys. There wasn't a whole lot to do in the quiet times on the ship, and punching a bag of sand was one of the better options. He'd been down there for a little while, in workout pants and a tank shirt, giving the bag a piece of his mind. He flashed a wide, wide grin to the blonde, nodding at the gloves she was already pulling on.

"Kara, right?" He thought he'd at least be polite. While he knew the ship inside and out, he wanted to make sure he knew the crew, too.

"Yeah, that's me," she said, saluting with an insolent grin of her own. She liked his attitude, at least; nothing annoyed her more than people being intimidated by her without her even trying.

She rolled her shoulders back, stretching her muscles, swinging her arms back and forth in anticipation of the workout ahead of her. "I'd be more worried about you keeping up with me if I were you," she countered, turning her back on the bag and inviting him to step closer with a wave of one gloved fist. "We have a betting pool on the ship, every time we fight with an audience. I haven't lost yet."

"Good, it'd be kind of rude to kick your ass if I didn't know your name," He said, eyebrows twitching. He knew Kara, knew her reputation, had run into her in the halls and mess. He knew that she'd rise to the bait-- even if she didn't want to admit it.

He tugged at his gloves, readjusting a little as he bounced from foot to foot. He shifted his weight carefully, the balls of his feet taking his weight, his muscles tightening and relaxing carefully. He kept his right hand by his face, his left arm shaking out by his side. This.... this could be fun.

Kara laughed, jerking her chin up towards him. "We'll see who's kicking whose ass soon enough." She struck fast, feinting and ducking inside Jim's guard, getting a hit in to his side and pulling away as fast as she could. His fist caught her on the shoulder as he stepped after her, and she reached in and chucked him under the chin before he could pull back. "It's really cute that you're willing to take one for the team like this," she said conversationally, giving him a snide, cheeky smirk.

"Take one for the team?" He paused, shifting his weight carefully as he read the weight of her blows. "You make it sound like people aren't lining up for this." He paused a beat before stepping forward, a blow from his left hitting just by her kidneys, and another from his right quickly following, but only a graze. Judging from the strength of her blows and both their speed, they were really evenly matched. A pleasant surprise, if he was honest.

She dodged his next hit, whipping her head back and turning fast so he was the one with his back to the punching bag. "Lining up to get smacked around by me? I guess." Jayne hadn't gotten tired of it yet, but most of the time she took as good a whacking as she gave. "So Connor's not working you hard enough, I take it?" She swung towards his jaw, following it with a quick jab to the other side. "I mean, if you've got nothing better to do than come hang out down here waiting for some company..."

"It takes a lot to work me hard enough," He said, blinking a minute before ducking the swing aimed at his face. He deflected the jab and responded with a quick one-two of his own, letting her talk before landing his blows. "And I'm not looking for company," He wheezed for a minute, ducking a blow and a half, getting a couple hits in of his own.

He paused, shifting his weight carefully, catching his breath. "I'm looking for a sparring partner who can hold their own, for once."

"On this ship, you won't have to look far," she promised, feinting left and bringing her right foot up towards his ear. He blocked it, but it gave her a good opening to spin and jab him in the side. "I mean, not that I'm not the best of your available options, ah," she grunted as he turned faster than she was expecting and pushed her off balance. She stumbled, caught herself before she hit the wall, and turned, eyes narrowing. Trash talk was clearly only going to distract him so much, or maybe not at all. The idea he might be holding back hadn't occurred to her before, but she was definitely considering it now.
